Grand Cross of the Iron Cross

    Hello,

Hermann Historica is auctioning off Göring's Grand Cross of the Iron Cross in April. How many of these were made?

    regards,

    Darren

Darren, Reicsmarschall Goring was the ONLY recipient of the Grand Cross during the Second World War....According to a reference book I have, the original cross awarded to Goring was destroyed in an air raid.....It states he had an elaborate jewelers' copy made along with various other copies during the war.....So this would be one of his copies.....I can't imagine very many originals were made....Bodes

There are a number of stories about his Grand Crosses, look around at some of the other thread - type in grand cross and goering or goring. He also had a platinum framed onyx core GC. I believe there was a proposed gold framed GC but was never approved. This is not to say that Hermann didn't have one made, but I would be interested to see where this was to come from. It looks like something I would drool over forever regardless who owned it.

You may be assured there were more produced POST war.....

The award wasn't even mentioned in the August 1957 publication setting forth the description, materials to be used etc. in the re-issue awards!!!

Thanks guys for the information. It really is a massive cross; very impressive to say the least. I will take a look at the other threads on the GC.

              regards,

              Darren

Thanks Dave for the pics. They give a good indication of the size differences betwen these crosses. I think I'm ready to bid now!

It is also very interesting to note that this "Hermann Historiica" Grosskreuz does NOT have the famous dipping ring which was a trade mark of all three known types. This one instead has distinctive corner corniches which reminds the observer very strongly of Souval..

I think this is what Pieter was referring to when he was kidding about the nice grand cross in onyx.

They also have the red baron's honor goblet on the same page. I wonder how the heck you would authenticate that!

Tom, MY reference book also denotes Goring DID have one with a platinum frame and onyx center specially made for him by a jeweler.....Bodes

lol ... Flak88 ... Ark of the Covenant!!! lemme know when it's up for auction!

Seriously, I would love to know how they authenticate the provenance of such pieces assuming it came from non-family related sources!! Why bother having a gilt Grand Cross made with onyx if you aint pictured wearing it, anyone seen a photo of Onkel Hermie wearing such a beast?

The GC that the HH auction shows is described as the Gold and Onyx example. It would be interesting to see the provenance that should come with this GC. There are other HG items in this auction.

The von Richthofen Honor Goblet is just one item of several lots that are attributed to him. The base of the goblet is named. Here again the provenance that accompanies these items would be very interesting.
