Just picked up a stunning frosty mint EK I Spange that came back with a Canadian soldier after WW2.

These mint, cased B H Meyer's seem to crop up quite a lot. I picked up two from a small medal shop in London a couple of years ago.

Wow! That's probably the best looking spange I have ever seen. That being said, I still kinda like the rough look on worn examples though.

For the historical side of things it's always nice to see how they came out of the factory though.

I have always wondered about these EK1 spanges however, how do they attach to the cross?

You don't attach it to the EK1, just hang it on a separate set of loops above it.

Can anyone tell me why some of my mint spanges are tarnishing especially in polished areas (swaz, numbers) while others (identical spanges) are still patina free? I don't get it really I mean they are in the same room, under the same environment conditions.

Ah, that makes more sense!

I find your observation about patina to be quite interesting though, do you have any comparison images? My best guess would be slight modifications to the metal alloy used in production. I remember from one of my other hobbies, vintage video game collecting, that some consoles plastic housing would yellow while others wouldn't. Eventually people came to the conclusion that the batches of plastic had slight variations to the mix, allowing some to oxidize differently then others.

I'm sure more experienced collectors might be able to shine some better light on it however.
