Gents, this is one of my best finds to date. I think this is a great story and I want to share with all!
I received a call from a guy on craigslist who wanted to see if I would be interested in his stuff. He said that he cleans out houses in upstate NY and said that he found a hodge podge of old German medals. He sent me pictures and everything looked far too good to be true. The only thing I was really optimistic about getting were the hauptmann IR 122 shoulder boards that I saw in the picture. I did some research on the unit before I went. Hesitantly, I met up with him in case any of it was real.
When I met up with him, he was extremely kind. As soon as he pulled out "the box," I knew I was in store for a treat. As I went through everything, all of it seemed to be 100% in line with the IR 122's history. I started to get anxious! Instead of being a box of hodge podge medals, it was all from the same guy!!
The guy asked $300 for the whole lot and I was happy to not haggle with him. He said he knew that it was worth more but it was just bonus for him as he had sold everything in the house already. He said that he would try and find the deceased owner's name (he couldn't remember), but he said it was definitely a German last name. He also said that he saved some old German books and comics that had "German writing in them," to show me at a latter date.
As soon as I can find the guy's name, I plan to research him. I'd like to know what he was doing living on the New York/Canadian border! These is a great find for me as we Americans know how hard it is to find GERMAN groupings on our soil. Here is what I found...enjoy!
