The ribbon ring is attached to the cross via an "extra" hump (lug) on the frame, and not right above the beading. Hope this helps?

Some manufacturers incorporated a 'lug' in their frames for the jump, or lug ring to attach to. Others didn't. It was just a matter of preference or a personal choice. I wouldn't call these crosses with the lug a 'variant' per se.
