A dirty, dirty EK2. But is it OK?

    Dear all,

Picked this up with a couple of other pieces that were, apparently, from a veteran soldier's family. It's filthy and I've made no attempt to clean it.

This cross looks good to me, but I have exactly zero experience of them and I can't find a maker's mark or number anywhere on the ring. The core is magnetic. Is it OK? If so, anyway of telling who made it?

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Simon

            Hi Simon

Thanks for showing this "out of the woodwork" piece. Can't remember ever seeing souch a dirty cross, thanks for showing. Can't tell you the maker but IMO a 100% period piece.

Really?? Why? Because it's dirty? I collect British Medals and I can't say I've ever, or would ever be put off by a bit of dirt. That said, I wouldn't mind cleaning it up, but worried about doing more harm than good. My usual firend is WD40 but I don't know what the paint on the core would think of that.

                Thanks for your input, gents.

In this case I would say that a mild cleaning would be preserving. I would brush it lightly, make sure not to take of the paint on the top of the swaz. Then a mild soap bath and use a blowdryer. Last I would apply some nonacid oil, I think WD40 is acidious. Last apply a soft cloth to remowe the surplus oil, don't rub!

Before commenting as to cleaning I'd like to make sure that what I believe is a core loose in the frame is correct. Yes?

                    Regards,
                    Stu
