Gentlemen. I would very much appreciate any information you are able to offer on this recently acquired grouping brought home by a G.I. stationed in Berlin immediately after the war.

The collection revolves around a 1943 edition of “DIE AUSZEICHNUNGEN DES GROSSDEUTSCHEN REICHS”. The book contains numerous pencil amendments to the contents, including alteration of the date from January 1943 to December 1944 In addition, altered and updated text has been affixed to the book in the form of typed slips.

Of perhaps great importance are a number of type written sheets which may form the basis of a significant amendment to the volume, intended for the 1944 release which perhaps never took place. Those of you who are German readers may be able to throw considerable light on the grouping from these pages.

Accompanying the collection and apparently always with the grouping, are four awards. A Pilot’s Badge, an excellent Screw Back Spange, A Lifesaving Medal and a fine and cased Order of the German Eagle, 2nd class. It is interesting to note that neither the Spange nor the Order of The Eagle appear in the 1943 edition and one cannot help but wonder if the intention was to photograph these examples, perhaps for inclusion in the 1944 edition.

It's a very nice collection and the notes in the book very interesting. Perhaps the vet made it into the old offices of the PKZ. I was surprised to see that Rudel was listed as being in "Jagdgeschwader Immelmann" when in fact he was in "Geschwader Immelmann".

Spange

Can you post closeup of the spange front and back? Is the stamp L/16 as the bird looks like a D.H.Mayer? First screw back I have seen of this maker. Thanks, Jim

Thanks for your comments so far Gentlemen. I'll see what I can do tomorrow Jim. It's now night in the UK and I'll try to get better shots in daylight. The mark is by no means clear but I believe it may be 1/18

The Spange is a Schickle (L/15) probably stamped for Mayer (L/18).
