German Cross in silver marked 20

Just acquired a cased DK in silver by Zimmermann. Classic hollow donut 4 rivit that meets all specs and compares in features with my reference. Purchased from the widow of a vet. The case meets all specs and does not respond to UV light. No padding on the top like my other DK box. My question is that my other DK in gold is a 6 rivet Deschler and weighs 62.1.

The DK in silver only weighs 43.1? Did Zimmermann make a light version?
Are DKs in silver more valuable?
Any reason why this might have comewith a case for the DK in gold?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hello Steve,

C.F. Zimmermann of Pforzheim did produce both light and heavy weight production pieces. The heavy weight pieces, having a tombak outer star, typically weigh about 65 grams. The light weight version, having a cupal outer star, weighs about 45 grams. The case for the German Cross in Silver should have a silver line that runs around the outer side of the lid. If yours has a gold line around the lid, then maybe it is simply a mismatched set. The German Cross in Silver is definitely worth more than the German Cross in Gold. It is much more scarce as only about 1,200 were awarded as compared to over 30,000 awards of the German Cross in Gold. Personally though, I prefer the German Cross in Gold because it was a Decoration for bravery in combat. It would be helpful if you could post pictures of your German Crosses and the cases. Without pictures, it is difficult to give you a true evaluation of the pieces and accurate answers to some questions.
    Best regards! Tom

It is impossable to give an opinion on these without large clear pictures. However everything Tom said is right on the mark.

I agree Dez- no details on the pics to evaluate. Now I must ask. Has anyone seen an original DKiG, of any maker that was less than 44g in weight?

                I have a gold Zimmermann that weighs 43.5 g.
But my silver Zimmermann weighs 44.9 g.

Thanks George. I had not heard of an original DKiG of less than 44 g. Thanks

My others (another gold Zimm and a gold Klein) are both over 44 g. (And of course, the heavy Zimmermann is also. )

George, have you seen any discernable differences in the wreath or date of the heavy and light zimmermans?

No. And in fact, based on die flaws, I'd say they're exactly the same.

Steve- the shape of the catch, hinge, pin , rivets and date from this distance all look like a zimmerman. The outer starburst appears black, rather than blued. All those factors are good. To accurately review this via photos, one needs close-ups of the wreath and date. There are subtle differences between real and fakes that take closer examination. Look at other DKiG posts here to see what I mean. Also, I assume that is "20" stamped on the undersurface of the pin. Do you have a close-up of that?

                              DK in Silver

                              Tom:

Thanks, the 5th picture down shows the 20 that is inscribed on the pin reverse. I compared the 20 with another www closeup (if that means anything?) and the 2 and 0 matched. If my camera is able to take such a closeup of the wreath and 1941, I shall post.
