    Opinions on a DKiG

    All,

I would appreciate your thoughts on this Steinhauer & Luck DKiG. I am fully aware of the controversy surrounding this maker , but I would like to get some comments on the packaging the cross is in, and please feel free to comment on the cross itself.<O</O
    <O</O

The clear cellophane type wrap is very crispy and ridged. It appears the cross inside this wrapping has been there for many of years. The packaging is marked on the backside:<O</O
    <O</O

"Die Herstellung von Orden und Ehrenzeichen unterliegt der Kontrolle der PräsidialKanzial. Der Hersteller ist verpflichtet, mangelhaft gelieferte Stücke gegen einwandfreien Ersatz umzutauschen."
    <O</O
    <O</O
Unfortunately, I do not read German but Google Translator says the above paragraph loosely translates to:<O</O
    <O</O

"The production of medals and decorations under the control of PräsidialKanzial. The manufacturer is obliged to exchange defective items delivered against proper compensation. "<O</O
    <O</O

Also, on the front of the packaging it appears to say, "LDO" inside a rectangular box.<O</O
    <O</O

Lastly, you’ll notice the red colored ring is not evenly visible around the circumference, and there is less of this red ring toward the bottom 7 and 8 o’clock position.<O</O
    <O</O

I would appreciate your thoughts on this cross.

    Thank you

    Mark

It's also important to note... there is no maker's number on the outside of the hinged pin, and I cannot see a number on the inside if the pin unless the cross comes out of its wrapping.<O</O

Last ones.... One more pic of the 7 and 8 o"clock position on the cross, showing where the red circle is thin.

I want to point out as well... the quality in materials used and the craftsmanship is definitely in this cross. It is simply a stunning and mint example that unfortunately, my camera cannot do it justice.<O</O

Not touching on the justified controversy surrounding the two types of S&L DKs, the private sale of any DK via retail shops was forbidden starting October 1941. There never ever was the need to put a DK in an LDO bag, the more so for a very late model like the S&L would be at any rate.
I personally think that the cellophane bag is a post war copy anyway due to the lack of brownish dis-colorization.

A question, though: is the cross marked?

I would concur with Dietrich and I would agree that this DKiG could never have come this way with the packet. If S&L were allowed to make this, everything points to very late war when the private sale of the DKiG would have been forbidden.

I do like these S&L DKiG and if the price was right (ie given the controversy) I would consider buying one.

Very strange find, is the packet completely sealed? I for one like the look of that packet - the purple hue to the print is a very good indicator that it is a wartime one. It would be a good idea to post it on the cases and packets forum and Im sure you will get some very knowledgeable opinions on it. I am also a believer in wartime S&L DKs so would buy that in a heartbeat.

                    Gents,

I appreciate and value your comments.

I too would like to know if this piece is marked, but I'll be sending it back to the seller. So, it will remain in the bag and unfortunately we will not know.

After looking more closely at this badge, I don’t like what I see. The dark circular starburst is not evenly lined up with the silver starburst underneath. In addition, the dark starburst is not evenly centered over the silver starburst. In fact, the dark starburst sits too far to the right.
                    <O</O
I would assume the Germans had a quality control inspector or some system in place that would have rejected this cross had it been made pre 45. I find it hard to believe they would have allowed this piece to pass inspection.

Although the quality in materials is in the badge, I have to agree with you gentlemen that this is a post war made piece that was put together without attention to detail.
                    <O</O
                    Thanks again gents!

It's difficult to read the writing in red... but it points out the gray starburst is not properly lined-up over the silver starburst underneath.

Mark your concerns are warranted. The offset alignment of the star burst is something that you never see this severely.

Like Dietrich has stated above these are highly controversial even not considering the cellophane package.

I would personally stay away from these unless you could get it VERY cheap.

I have seen these type of crosses back in the early 80's,they came from Austria and a known POS dealer(Wolfram Diabel) had at least 20 of these in his shop in Pensburg West Germany. So that was back in the 80's and 30 years later the package(cellophane) would have aged but a package from the war has a browm hue to it due to time and will begain to get brittle in some areas around the edges.I have other badges and an officers bullion cap eagle that are still in their orig. cellophane and they are a little brittle and have the brown hue from age. .I do not know if your badge is one of his or not but it sure looks like it.He also had some knights crosses made by the same maker in Austria that were about 90% correct and they too came in this type of package??They were S&L CROSSES.Now here is the funny part the ribbons that he had for the KC's were made in "England"and they looked and had the feel of an orig. The way off center SWAS. of the cross was just like the one you have.I would leave this badge alone and get one you can sleep with knowing it is 100% orig.
