German Cross Question

I cant seem to find exactly what the German Cross (silver and gold) were awarded for. All I could find is that its kind of inbetween Iron Cross 1st class and Knights Cross.

Can someone fill me in a little?

I think you've got it. The DK in Gold was "given for acts of bravery of the fighting forces above that which was required for the...EK 1st class but not up to that required for the DK".
There is a silver version awarded "for acts of leadership that furthered the war effort, rather than for bravery" (info taken from C.Ailsby)
