    Questions about EK1 Vaulting

    Hello,

Please forgive my ignorance but I am wondering if anyone knows if EK1 makers ever made EK1's in that convex vaulted shape from the factory or is that always something that was done after the manufacture. In other words, did the factory bend em' or did the buyer have to find a jeweler (or do it himself?)

Also, I have heard conflicting information about the following. Does the fact that a cross is vaulted detract from it's value? Some say yes. Some say no. Opinions?

    Regards,
    Dennis

From what I have read on the forum vaulting was done by some manufacturer's.

Of course if the winner of the award wanted to vault it he went and did it.

To me vaulting does not diminish the value of the cross.

      Hi Dennis,

Yes, some 1939 EK1s were made from the factory with a vault. I think it was only with screwbacks, and I believe that this practice probably stopped after 1941. Thus many later EK1s you see that are vaulted were done by hand (and you can tell).

I would say that a good factory-vaulted EK1 would be worth somewhat more than a flat one. As for a later one that's been hand-vaulted, to me it doesn't diminish the value at all, but that's a matter of opinion like any condition-related issue.

      Here's a factory vaulted one.

Trevor, I do not agree about only screwbacks. Here are my two Junckers. The vault form just means the early cross IMHO.

I stand corrected by a very beautiful cross.

I knew 1914 replacement pinback EK1s came with factory vaulting -- I have a few myself.

The screwback I showed is a Juncker also. Can I see a front and rear shot of your 1939 pinback please ?

Sure! This one is also very interesting - the core is nonmagnetic!

                    Cпасибо!

You have some very nice vaulted Junckers. The Imperial cross is interesting with a non-magnetic core, since this core design was more often magnetic, in my personal observation. Here is another with the same core design, but magnetic, vaulted and marked.

Here is my vaulted EK1. Opinions?

This is a fairly common vaulted EK1 according to the "39' EK 1. Klasse rarity statistics" board here on w-a.com. I like it. Whadda U guys think?
