    Hello Marcus ,

This post just shows what a good technique can do for a medal , a real cracker now , lovely !!!

I don't usually agree with cleaning medals but the results speak for themselves , i have also dipped my toe in the cleaning water by using the vaseline method on one of my rough zinc cholm shields , as recommended by Frank.H i think ?

And yes it works brilliantly !!!

The shield was nearly pure white ( i think it was a chemical reaction to the paint and not zinc pest ) i treated it with vaseline let it stand and carefully removed it and lo and behold a gorgeous grey shield with no holes or damage in the zinc . You can see the " Before " picture on the cholm shield page by Stijn , very white and grotty but the crap photo doesn't help . Stijn if your reading this i have a better picture of my 2nd type Cholm shield to post on your Cholm shield page .

Thanks again Marcus for showing us your lovely RK KVK , the nearest thing i have to this is a 57 one !

    Warm Regards

    Grant

            Calgon

The 'cleaning solution' you want is a lime scale remover. Unfortunately some are strong enough to damage silver. A milder/safer substitute is a water softener. They come in liquid and powder form. Calgon makes a good liquid one. For this to work, the aluminum foil must be in the bottom of the bowl and the silver piece must be touching the foil. After about 2 minutes, rinse in hot water and blot dry.

Gary thats it I remember Frank saying it was water softener and that was the procedure as well..........with lots of salt in there as well.

The effect is outstanding! But will this solution damage enamel and brass or not??

                    Hi Theodor,

This method is only for solid SILVER & real silver coated awards, nothing else at all, it has no effect on tombak and will damage zinc I think.

So please don't try it on anything else, Frank or Gary may be able to confirm this exactly.

(Those beautiful Bulgarian awards don't need cleaning anyway, I'll have to show you mine)

                    Kind regards,

                    Marcus

Goddard's Silver Dip also works extremely well on KVK1s.

I've never tried it on anything but silver as I have been told it will have either no effect or will do damage.
