Hi Mike,

'55' is a maker number, assigned by a central office intended to oversee quality control and other administrative functions. It's a Third Reich thing only. In the case of '55,' the maker is J.E. Hammer & Söhne (or maybe Sohn) from Geringswalde. Their crosses are generally some of the worst made and, in many folks' opinion, the ugliest, although early (unmarked) examples can be quite nice.
