    Beading flaw

I have seen this "flaw" on the upper arm of several crosses that are original. Is this a trait of one maker or seen on many?

    Hi Bernie,

I suspect that that dent was caused by some step in the assembly or finishing process, as I too have noted it on different crosses by different makers. It is most often in that position, but not always. I think it may have been caused by some sort of clamp used to hold the cross, but I'm not sure.

It is also found on some fakes, by the way (the best ones).

Is the cross you show marked '4'?

It's advertised for sale as an unmarked S&L on the e-stand. Apologies to the sellar for using his pic but it was the only one I could find with that "flaw".

          Hi Bernie!
Here's a kind of similiar bump on one of my Juncker L/12 EK I's. I always thought this bump was wear damage or dropped?
          Thanks,
          Greg

It's common enough across makers that I suspect it's more than simple damage.

I tend to agree. The ones I'm referring to all have the same hump just under the eyelet. Perhaps a flaw in the dies of one company making the frame?

No, not that. It's not a "flaw" as we understand the term in the hobby.

Can't resist this one: How does "the hobby" view the term "flaw"? Generally speaking, it's an imperfection, be it accidental or by negligence.

                    Hi Hank,

Within the study of the Iron Cross, a frame "flaw" is generally considered to be an imperfection of the die that results in a problem on the frame. You are correct that a "flaw" is, broadly speaking, an imperfection. To use the example of under discussion here, damage (for example from dropping a cross) will result in a "flaw" in the general sense, but not in the way we use the term within the hobby.

I hope this is of some help.

                    Best,
                    Trevor

I used "flaw" for lack of a better term.
