Are you saying that the cross in question is on the picture?

The knight cross and the photo come directly from Mr. Austermann family.

Nice group! I really like that '57 cross, very nice and noticeable that it was used, ...but '39 model appears to be untouched by wear - kind fresh look to it, can you post full reverse of '39.

Congratulations, Bucky on a phenomenal grouping!

That is certainly the dream of every preservationist to acquire such a collection.

I hope you are able to maintain and keep the collection together during your custodial period, and display it in a manner befitting the man, and your personal enjoyment.

As you sort through the collection, it would be great to see some postings of any unusual items, abzeichen, urkunden and candid photos of Herr Austermann.

          Very Nice!

          Eric

What means it to oak leaves?

                Thanks Bucky

so what is the final verdict?? Is the 57er really the same one as in the picture being worn by Austermann?? If so, wouldnt Alikns theory almost be correct?? Is there anything else in the grouping (photos) that could prove that this is the same cross?? (I believe it is). Interesting....and a great grouping!

I didn't see the picture of him wearing '57 cross, but the '57 cross looks worn and I don't see wear on '39, so who knows what is on that picture and what kind of oaks he is wearing,....I can't tell.

exactly Alikin. after taking a closer look...those are my thoughts as well that the 39 looks mighty clean.

                                Repainted?

Maybe it is just me but does the reverse of the "39" cross look repainted from about the mid part of the upper arm down the center to the lower arm to include the date? Could this have been an attempt to cover wear on the cross?
