Interesting! (We have got to get you to join the Parking Lot Pack at Lowell, John!) Just from your description, the fact that individually discernible FIBERS, rather than the entire box, are glowing suggests:

    1) some sort of "recycled" mixture, possibly a wartime mixture of wood or cloth shreds to "stretch" the cardboard, or

    2) some sort of imperfection in the processing that lead to a natural and OK glowing of whatever these fibers are. What color do they glow?

I have never encountered that period paper that glowed, entirely glowed, the way modern paper does. The fact that this is glowing the way you describes suggests some sort of mixture that--since it is not ALL glowing--could well be period.

These cartons were, after all, intended to be promptly thrown away the instant they were opened, not saved. That would put these in the same sort of category as newspaper or meat wrapping paper or anything else far down on the need for permanence scale.

        eggshells!

Why do the members feel the need to walk on eggshells when questioning a certain item purchased from one of the dealers/sponsers........??? It's so silly and shouldn't be remotely necessary!

John, if it glows, go with your gut and return it...the dealer can't lose ( gain your confidance etc.) and will sell it to someone else.

These packages came in cartons of hundreds and were NOT 'made-up' or 'folded out' until the case was to be placed within. In other words it would have been flat until the final matching of case and outer carton.

If it's walking and quacking like a duck well then it's probably a duck...

        John

            Not at all!

John...you mis-read my intent! Sure we start somewhere/sometime but, rest assured I'm not directing my frustration toward you!! Actually, I appreciate a fellow like you while only 3 yrs digging through this stuff you can tell when something does not 'feel' right and starts to look for an answer! Good work! Always go for the gut feeling...

I wonder who sold you the 'packet'...

                John J,

A post like the “eggshell” one is somewhat edgy and very unnecessary. John brought up an item for review and the item should be discussed in its own right. I know where the item came from but it doesn’t matter, it could have come from anywhere. My point is that I get the feeling (and I’m not the only one) that you are constantly trying to prove something and that you have contempt for many dealers who participate here (many of them who help provide this forum to you).
