    Help on this Iron Cross

Where there ever Iron crosses like this? with the bronze color. I thought it was a repo but it came from a vets son that had an orginal hj belt buckle. And I belive the size matches examples found in a couple of my books. But Iron Crosses are not my thing. What do you guys think?

    Hi Justin,

This cross looks fine to me. I believe that it's an original brass core Iron Cross - the type favored by Kreigsmarine personel, due the fact that the brass did not corode as iron could during maritime service.

        Question

Is there a hallmark or number stamped on the front of the pin?

This is basically an early Iron Cross First Class, made prior to the days when strict quality control regulations under the LDO were enforced and several manufacturers were using non-regulation (i.e. non-iron) materials for the centre core. This practise was later prohibited and stern warning issued about using materials other than iron.

              Nice Cross!

              Justin,

              I certainly like your cross.

I have seen a few of that type where the recipient removed the paint on the swas. and date to make them 'stand out' against the black background.

And the back. I don't go for the kiegsmarine theory either, but interestingly this one appears to have saltwater corrosion on the back...

I have an EK that looks very similar to yours, it was issued to an artillery leutnant. I would venture to say that yours is worth around $200 US - depending on whether you have the case.
