So if the '4' had been incused as described you wouldn't have looked any further? Maybe to a 'newbie' if the seller says it's incised you believe, especially if the picture is not entirely clear, then you move on to more features.

    Cheers.

I certainly would have looked further before shelling out big bucks! But the wrong hallmark on the item was enough for me to draw my conclusions about it. I'm sure that whoever is faking these is using a variety of markings, so it is well worth looking at all the characteristics. But the bad hallmark and the rather obvious fake wear should be enough to make it clear that this is a lemon.

Tim, my intent here was to show exactly that, more than one comparison. I know there is also a fake with a perfectly nice looking incuse '4' floating about.

              Hi Ed...
Well, its a fake RK...and its nice to see that the "newbies" picked up on this. It goes to show the lengths that a faker must go these days (thanks to the disemination of information that as a group we have in part been instrumental in).
What do we do?.. firstly, keep flagging up the the fakes as they appear and maintain the knowledge pool of known good-un's. Secondly, advise all potential newcomers to buy via a reputable dealer (such as Detlev).
But shouldnt we take a more agressive stance and actively pursue the criminals who use e-bay as a vehicle for their fraud?...

Brian - do you have any photos of the fake with the "correct" style of makers mark?

Tim, 'correct style' of any maker mark can and has ofcourse been reproduced so this in and of itself is not a guarantee...we need to look at the entire piece!
