I wonder why they brought them? Given the limitted amount of stuff one can carry/ship you'd have thought they would have brought something more valuable and/or useful. Perhaps they thought they could trade them here?

I was wondering the same thing, Don...interesting that this couple would schlepp this stuff all the way here in the '50s--when it wasn't worth that much and given the stigma of TR stuff then, much less today...

Given the De-nazifacation policy and the US Policy after the War toward NS etc. these are about the last thing I would want to have with me trying to immigrate. I guess they were living on the edge.

I don't think there was much of a stigma in the US about these things. Every GI seems to have come back laden with the stuff. Perhaps because of the GI trade in Germany they thought they could do the same thing here.

Members of my Mothers family came to the US in the late 40s and were interviewed about wartime activities etc. Party membership etc. The ones with wartime service had to show they were not members of the SS. They were asked to denazify their personal documents. We still have in the Family a card from my cousin who was required to sign a document that he was not a member of the Nazi party, he was 13 when the War ended. My favorite story about them coming was that when one of the Army veterans went to the bank to ask for a GI home loan he was asked if he was a WWII Vet and said yes and was given the loan. It is a nice lot regardless of where it came from.

That is hilarious, Johnny! Just shows that the paperwork requirements for banks back then were obviously much less stringent than today.
