    DKIG Opinion

    Hello,
I was hoping to get dietrichs opinion on this.
And any one else please comment.
    I think it is good.
The grossadmiral is farther to the right than examples I have seen?
and doenitz signature is a bit different.
    Thanks Paul

While posted in the wrong forum, I will make a quick comment--this document seems to me to be OK. The fold in the middle is unlikely to be one put there by a forger, the printed fonts look correct, and the signature of Donitz is within the range of his signature, which IMO was quite varied.

I do note that the typed "grossadmiral" is offset to the right whereas it should be centered.

This may be a result of a new typist who did not know it should be centered and thought it should be offset right.

I also do not know when the grossadmiral went from being printed to typed, maybe early 1944? I just derived this opinion from other KM DKIG docs I have seen and the printed grossadmiral seems to have been dropped at some point for the typed version.

These docs can be tricky but this one is probably period I believe.

        Hi Paul,

from what I see it looks ok. I'm sure you checked whether the recipient is 'legal !? The embossed navy seal needs to be checked also.
But, in all honesty, I am more the metal guy - not the paper-one...

A Maschinenmaat with a DKiG? I don't think many of this lower rank got this award (I don't want to say this document is a fake, I'm not into this but I think it's a rare occasion that a rank like that got an award like that so if it's real then it's even more special because of the lower rank).

If you check the U-boat forums and crew lists, you will see that they did indeed get DKIGs.

This awardee was a member of a small vessel, thereby the responsibilities were much higher than on a battleship for example. It also means that an engineer could easily have saved the boat by his quick action or skill in an emergency with the machinery.

I already know that this is the case with this sailor as I have checked his name against the records.

That is a nice piece of history you have there.... and as stated above,,, it really is not that uncommon to find enlisted soldiers with high awards... very cool....

Do you know the U-boat number he was on? I think the question was on which type of U-boat he served (Type II, Type VII, Type IX, Type XIV, Type XXI or Type XXIII).

I know that lower ranks also could get this award but to receive it you already had to be awarded the EKII and EKI which was not that easy for a lower rank. I know of an Obermaschinenmaat who got the RK.
