Cast or Soldered?

Hi Gentlemen,

Here is one common medal, a War Merit 2nd Class by Klein & Quenzer.
Someone has brought to my attention that the ring on suspending the ribbon ring on this example was cast together with the medal rather than being soldered on.

I have only scans of the medal, thus I can't examine the medal. So is the ring cast or soldered?

If the ring is cast in one piece with the medal I would exspect to see drilling traces in the hole. It looks to me that I can see that. The ring would not be cast with the hole, way too complicated of a mold. I would say cast.

It's my understanding that the earlier pieces were made from tombak or some other buntmetall and have soldered rings, but the later Kriegsmetall/zinc pieces have the ring made as an integral part of the cross.Yours looks like a good Kriegsmetall piece.

Hi Dietrich,

No one here said this example is bad. The person I sold this piece has some doubts so I'm just bringing up his questions as I'm unsure of the manufacturing details of the ring to answer his queries accurately.
