I agree! This KC is a jewell! You should keep it anyway. The fact that this cross was awarded to your father (if this is the case) makes it an invaluable item for your family.

I think he meant if you were in his father's shoes way back when

      'Which would you keep?'

"That way I can get an idea on when he might have received and where he was in his service. He did receive the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. I have these documents but not the medals."

Get some pics of the documents for the EKI and II and put them on the forum, this way you can get help with where your father served. If the cross was issued to him he has to be in some records, especially if it was not later than -44, the Germans was very fuzzy about these things.

The last update by the OdR on RK winners (Felgiebel) was the thoroughly
cleansed version in conjunction with the Bundesarchiv.ALL signals
wires, paperwork etc up to the Doenitz declaration. If you are NOT on there,
          You are a No No.
Lets have some unit,Regt,Name Rank where when.
          Otherwise another story IMO

Unmarked Knights Cross pics & owner history

            Hi,

As the pics are posted and the story posted for a couple of days, I have removed the story of Kurt Rittner's service as I am not sure this is the right forum for investigating the story, but will seek that out in another area of the discussion forum.

I have had some really nice response to the story, thank you!

Here are the particulars to the KC. I am mostly interested in it's authenticity, not necessarily sale at this point. And although in my dad's possession and now in mine, he is not on any lists.

The unmarked KC is 48.5 mm by 48.5 mm and weights 26 grams that is the weight with the sprung, ribbon and pins. It has an iron/magnetic core and silver frame. The Jeweler estimated that the sprung was brass.

            Thanks for your time,
            Yours in Chasing History

Amazing story. Thanks for sharing. It is interesting there is no mention of him receiving the RK, which all records also indicate.

Did he have any relatives (brother, cousins etc.) that may have received the RK?

The only entry for a Rittner is:

              Rittner, Arthur Hptm. d.R., Fhr. III./I.R. 276 25.10.42

                Unmarked Cross

                Hi Darrell,

Your welcome. It is a lot of story. I did not know my father's family very well, I do know he had no brothers but had cousins. It is possible as the box (pic to come) it was found in was wrapped in silver paper titled .....for grandmother, so yes, a cousin is likely. I will check into that.

Do you know of a possible manufacture date of such a KC? Or wait until the pics come and take a look.

                Thanks.

It would be very interesting to see if the Rittner listed was a cousin
The cross is almost certainly a Juncker, but doesn't have any markings. You say it has silver frames. Are you sure? How do you know? If they were silver frames they should at least have an 800 marking.

If of early war manufacture it is likely neusilber and thus not marked as such. Until better photos are shown lets wait and see
