I believe it's a Mayer too, jon. Good call.

It looks indeed like a Mayer. But one with an error on his beak and not that great detail in general. At least based on these pictures.

Do other Mayers have such a poorly fitted hinge to hinge roller?

              You're right Bob,

It is a poorly fitted application. And maybe the angle of the shot and the stress on the barrel from hard wear is adding to it too.

This Mayer shows signs of stress too, but not as bad a fit as the other. Are you thinking a possible pin replacement on the above spange?

                Robert,

After seeing your example, I would think it could be stretching from stress on the rotator part of the hinge assembly. Such a poorly designed pin and hinge arrangement would make for extreme stress on the rotator part of the hinge, every time it is opened or closed.

Much like the dreaded 'stretch' on the bracelet of a gold Rolex, from stress, I would think a redesigned hinge, or more drastically tapered pin, would have been the solution.

The damage to the head could be the result of poorly cleaned and lubricated dies. The head/beak is the smallest part and the head/beak would be the easiest to damage upon extraction from the die.

                  Yes,

I really like the tapered pin of the Unknown Maker Spange, or this 1st pattern Juncker...
