The Screwback and convex iron cross Souval

    Hi Guys,
    i bought this
For me is a very nice original period made convex cross by L/58 (Souval-Wien).

In the middle of 1940 this type, convex, it was forbidden but the screwback attack kept on being produced.

This type of decoration were never officially awarded.

    Any opinion are welcome.

    Thanks in advance

    Ciao

i dont think the cross was made this way it has been vaulted by the original owner,
              nice cross though,

That would be my opinion as well.
The question is can it be proven some how? Either one way or another.

                  My thoughts

                  Hello,

I have owned several Souval over time and feel that this one does display the correct five primary frame, core and screw plate characteristics. As Souval did produce EK after the cessation of hostilities it's always a bit of a guess as to when it may have been made. My opinion, based on condition alone, would be that it was indeed pre-45.

I agree with upbeek that it has been hand vaulted. If you look at the frame at all four inner corners you will see that it is lifted away from the core. In my experience that results from hand vaulting.

                  Regards,
                  Stu

                    Here's one before vaulting, flat.

                        Hi!

Opposite the opinion of many colleagues Souval crosses don't please me very well normally. There are however always exceptions of the rule.

Gew44s Souval IC 1st Class SB is the most beautifull Souval cross i ever saw. This one is -in my eyes- a early wartime piece which was produced in very high quality. There are many characteristics those shows that.
                        For example..
                        • the typical painting which one can see on early pieces made from any other makers and...
                        • a very substantial framework

Stu is right with his opinion about the vaulting. As he said the lifted frame at all four inner corners is the result from vaulting with hands by the owner. This characteristic is the best to recognize whether a cross was vaulted with hands by the owner.
If crosses were already manufactured in this form the frame at all four inner corners would would fit accurately to the core and there wouldn't be any gap between frame and core.

                        Regards
                        Andreas

                          Thanks for yours reply.

I think this iron cross was made directly by Souval, because the bending of the cross is possible only by bending die.

the frame is made by very hard material and I think the corner near the svastika is linear to avoid breakage and pressing on the center break the welding by side frame.

                          IMO

                          Bye

                            L58 convex

If the Souval screwback was vaulted by hand it must have been a trend. I've owned a perfectly vaulted example since the mid-70s. IMO it was done far to well to have been done by an individiaul bending a flat cross.

                              Maybe yours was...

                              Hello Rich,

To be clear. My position is that the cross posted at the top of this thread is hand vaulted. There could well have been Souval screw back EKI that were factory vaulted. I don't know. Maybe yours is such. How about posting some pictures. It may be of value to study.

                              Regards,
                              Stu
