    Iron Cross Second Class (Real?)

This was given to me and out of my very small collection it is my favorite piece - especially because of who gave it to me. It seems pretty real to me but I'm learning that this field requires lots of experience and time to learn the little details.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Souval Frame EKII

    Hello,

Your cross appears to be an authentic Souval frame EKII. I will post three views of one of mine to compare.

Note the extended center bead or "bird foot" in each outer corner. Also the rounded inner corner beading and the small horizontal die flaw between the 3rd and 4th beads from the left on the 12 o'clock arm.

If you wish to learn more about these unique EKII have a read of Peter Wiking's Souval article pinned to the top of this forum.

    Regards,
    Stu

          Jump Ring

By the way...your jump ring is not broken...Souval EKII only have the ring welded to the frame on the obverse side. Should be a small gap between it and the frame, where that small circle is you can see, on the reverse. It has not been torn loose.

Yes your ek2 is a good wartime souval. As Stu has mentioned, the "bird foot" at corners where the rims meet. The die flaw at top left upper arm's rim,the 'dot' under the suspension loop which was made to center the ring before soldering and also the typical inner 'rounders' that touches the swastika.

-I've made the mistake of saying that it has a dipping 3 on the date like what Stu has said,it has been seen only on ek1 not ek2 .Although examples of unmarked souval using different dates type have been noticed,i'll still stick with what Stu has mentioned.

              Dipped, dipping , dropped 3

              Hello,

Sim has mentioned the dropped 3. Although I have not as yet seen it on EKII it is an additional feature you will find on Souval EKI. Here is a picture of one just for refrence should you come across one. Note how the 3 is slightly lower than the 19_9.

              Regards,

You guys are right! Here, I have included close ups of all the necessary areas and it seems to have all the things that you guys have mentioned. Is this cross more sought after then the other ones that do not have the flaw/unique attributes - or is it just something that's really neat, but just as easy to get as others?

this souval cross is not a cross that you find everywhere everyday,I should say its not that common.

Yeah..it does not seem to have a dipping 3. Curious though - someone mentioned that this make may have been produced into the postwar periods, and so I guess there is a risk of getting one that is not during wartime. How can you tell if the one I have is distinctly wartime - or is it anybody's guess?

you learn something new every day, i placed an add in the local paper recently and a guy had a ek2 and the frozen meat medal , i gave him 50 u.k the pair, as i thought the loop was broken, i fear i ripped him off whats the ratio made compared to the rest ?

                        Wow

If he was happy with the amount of money you gave him then you didn't rip him off. I mean I scored a perfect DAK and Reed green tunic for 40 Euro together and I don't feel bad. Actually I feel really good. When you score something great for cheap that should give you a good feeling not a bad one.

                            Ken's right,

If you give him what he wants, he's to blame himself down the road. When you press him for a better price, he'll blame you when he finds out what it's really worth. The art of business, closing the deal is 99% of 'street buying.' Good purchase, BTW.

                              Stu,

I just thought of you when I saw this Souval EKII on the e-stand today, described as a war-period Souval. I have (4) Souval EKII's, none with the dipping '3' like this...
