    Vaulted 65 EK1

I don't have a vaulted EK1 yet and I actually like the denazified and beat up crosses. Did Klein&Quenzer make vaulted EK1s or has this been bent? The edges of the arms seem rather flat for a genuine vaulted cross. Also, does a vaulted cross mean early war issue? What should be paid for a cross like this? Thanks for any comments. Ausgang

    Hand vaulted EK

    Hello,

I do not believe that K and Q made any official issue number 65 vaulted EKI. Private purchase EKI are sometimes vaulted but to the best of my knowledge K and Q did not make private purchase EKI. Therefore I believe it to be hand vaulted. Have a look at the frame adjacent to the Swas. It will often be lifted up and away from the core if it has been hand vaulted. Even if the cross is flattened later a gap will often remain.

As to what to pay...Beauty Is In The Eye of The Beholder...it is not one I would collect but does speak to the aftermath of the war in a way.

    Regards,
    Stu

PS: I'm no expert...wait for others to confirm (or not) my thoughts.

Hey Stu W, thanks for the reply. The only vaulted EK1 that I have turned out to be a fake but at least the straight part of the arms were curved. I suppose the thing to do is look at some Imperial vaulted EK1s since the construction is most likely the same. I like the looks of this one but denazified crosses are rather easy to come by to say the least; and if someone got busy on this to remove the swastika, they probably decided to make it a vaulted as well. Even if no one else replies to this thread you've dampened my enthusiasm for this piece which is good. I don't think that I'm the only one who obsesses about a potential purchase to detriment of my wallet! Thanks, Ausgang

        Search Feature

        Hello,

You are welcome. I suggest that if you opened the "search" feature on the tool bar at top of page, then went to "advanced" search and entered the keywords "vaulted EK", then selected and highlighted the "Crosses of the Wehrmacht" forum for the search you would get many hits. That would allow you to compare construction technique of many TR EKI.

You may also find this article useful...

        Good luck,

That applies to all TR EK1s. All official "award" EK1s are flat, not vaulted. If they are vaulted, they would be done after the award by the recipient
