see the area mark with the oblong. this is also slightly damaged could this have been the pivot point if you see what i mean, the weight would have been spread along the 3 o'clock arm. resulting in less damage along it.

two layers of paint?
When i said this damage could have been done by another round medal along side, this would not have happend in wear but may be they were droped and stepped on?
I've also noticed something else is it me or has this cross got two coats on shown in the circle or is it just my eyesight!!!
This could exsplain the dates.

Here is some more photos showing the pressed in areas. The first one is the lower right side. The paint does look like it was redone, as there are traces of paint along the inside edges of the beading.Comment
