Why are there only 47 non-combatant EK2s? Are they really that rare(with the ribbon and all) or just not that desireable? I know that in the modern military, 9-10ths of the military are the logistical support for the 10% who actually do the fighting. I would think that there would be far more noncombatant awards that noncombatants...

Yes, it might sound strange, but some things are different from what they were 90+ years ago. Firstly, non-combatants had to achieve a great deal more to get an ek2, simply because they weren't in combat. Logistics has improved alot since then and the ratio, i dare say, has changed with it. Here are a few telling figures: In the Franco-Prussian of 1870-71 a total of 43,242 combatant ek2s were awarded against 4,002 non-combatants. And during the great war the figures tell even more; 3,700,000+ combatant ek2s vs. 13,000 non-combatants.. I hope that helped, Paul
