From what I see it is an original and nice shield.

The "J"

I thought the Serif J was an issue?

This is a seriff J, you can clearly see the differences.

Okay, the serif is much larger on the fake, I see that. What about the J's that aren't serif. Are they correct, is that a variation, or should they all look like the example I posted?

There are a lot of different shields, each of them with its own characteristics, your is not a variation is simply a shield made in this way from an unknown maker. Other makers used different dies, so we have now a variety of shields as we have a variety of ISA, PAB, CCC, medals...
