The TV programme (UK viewers) about the Dunkirk evacuation last week reminded me that while Dunkirk was the scene of a glorious defeat for the British in 1940, it was also the scene of a glory-less victory for the Germans in 1944-45. The Nazi garrison there held out until the last day of the war in Europe, having been trapped for months in a 'pocket' like Cholm and Demjansk. This is the 'shield' which the garrison awarded themselves - in a miniature form for wearing on the side of the field cap.

Frank.
I've often wondered about that. The only explataion I could come up with was that it might have been difficult to define an umlaut on so crudely stamped a badge. However, I have seen the 'ue' used on other wartime items like documents (Flugzeugfuehrer etc) for no apparent reason. (I still haven't learned how to post an unlaut on this forum!)
Cheers.
Robin.

Well the lack of umlauts on docs i can understand if the typewriter being used wasn't German.
How about this for a theory. The order for the badge is drawn up at headquarters. Not having a German typewriter, the clerk types the name in this format and sends it off to who ever was given the job of producing the badges. That person then simply follows what's written in the order.Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

dunkirk shield entry in wehrpass
Hi fellow collectors, prehaps i'll be throwing a small spanner in the works regarding this shield and entries in soldbuchs/wehrpass' or will I again be devaluing my collection as I seem to have on a couple of occasions . I have just bought (not in my possession yet) a wehrpass which shows the entry " Bestz Dunkirchen Schild Zu Tragen " in the awards section of the wehrpass. As I don;t have the wehrpass in my hands I cannot give a hands on opinion of the entry but the scan looked ok to me. Any opinions on this entry as every one says any written words/citations regarding this rare award do not use this wording? Look forward to your words, regards Paul
