    cholm shield

    Hi guys,

What do personally think about this one? I must say It looks convincing when I compare it with Niemann reference...

It comes with award doc for Richard Bohn, 1. Inf.-Reg. 551 vom 31.10.1942

    Best
    Martin

PS: this is only picture I have. Too bad in black-white...

Based on this one pic I like what I see. If you can get color pics and post them, that would be great

Nice original but be careful - B&W pic can hide possible rust. Ask for color images.

            Cholmshield

            Hello MArtin,

This shield looks very promising and from the pictures provided i say : original. The dark zones are most probably rust (or cleaned away rust) and that would be perfectly correct for a awardes shield (the awarded Cholmshields are of this type.

See also the publication: "Verleihungsurkunden zum Cholmschild .... " ISBN nr. 90–8110-571-X

Would offcoarse be very interested to see further pictures from both shield (front and reverse) and award document.

            Cordial greetings,
my collectionfield : German glider pilots

                        Cholm shield

Does any one know how many of these were awarded to the Luftwaffe?

                            CHolmshield

                            Hello,

The award document is also a original and IMHO it would not surprise me iff the set does belong togheter (Shield and award document / read not united at some point to increase the value)

This is a posthumously award, as the named Uffz. Richard Bohn was KIA in Cholm in april 1942. So the award document + 1 piece of a cholmshield where sent towards teh enxt of kin.

I would be interested to see the number and abbrevation on the reverse, the lettering (caligraphy) is certainly OK for one of the known Kalligraphes who did fill in these Cholmshield award documents.

                            Very nice piece for sure.

The question howmany Luftwaffe personel did get a Cholmshield is not known as of today. The original award lists of the Cholmshield are not preserved as far as we know so all we have is the Cholmlegacy's arround and recnstruct the awardings, etc .... (therefore i can only advise to get a copy of the booklet "Die Verleihungsurkunden zum Cholmschield" ISBN nr. ISBN : 90–8110-571-X - published 2006.

When talking about Luftwaffe and Cholm you have to count the following persons:

                            * Glider pilots who landed their and the crew (Bordmechanics)
                            * Lw. Transport planes (landed at the beginning of the battle, and later on a few where shot down near Cholm where the crews did manage to make it inside the Cholmpocket)
                            * Lw. Bomber planes, a few where shot down also and the crews where able to make it inside the encerclement.

I think you have to take a number of arround 200 towards 300 former Luftwaffe members of a total of 5486 known (and proven) total awards.

                            Cordial greetings,

Thanks Stijn for the additional information of this person and Luftwaffe.

I also strongly believe this doc and shield belongs to each other...
