Hi gents,

seems i am infected by these

Just got this one that i bought of very crappy pics ...... only one pic. But i meant to see a good S&L and got it for good money.

I received this interesting S&L PLM that is had some surprises for me.

The ribbon here is 60mm wide and the weight of the PLM incl. suspension loop is heavy ... 31,68 gramm

As ususal there are many pics to follow, i let you know when i uploaded them all.

So here´s the sellers one and only pic

I received this one, badly chipped but i don´t mind about that ..... looks battle worn and the price was still good

Typical S&L features as usual, baroque ring, connected ur, slightly dipping e in rite

Again a Piece without the typical flaw. But here i finally can show where S&L repaired the die .... not perfect repaired but well done.

Surprise surprise ....... marked 800 on the baroque ring and suspension loop

A shot where we cann see the pebbling of the base material. cyphers and crown are part of the die, but hard to show here.
And the ribbon in close up ..... remember ... 60mm wide

And as last shots overview pics avers and reverse again. Piece itself is well done but the details of the eagles are less than on my other one. Maybe this is one of the last the S&L made? Heavy weight and missing details, repaired die .......

But i like that one very much, it´s badly chipped but will surely look good in any imperial display.

Great PLM Rudiger, fascinating on many levels!!!!
First SILVER!!!! I wasn't sure they still made a silver version in later years, but this proves they did!! Also explains the heavier weight!! Pretty scarce I think from this date??
Also the die flaw, does seem to prove at some point S&L did indeed tidy up the die to try and eliminate the flaw, so that's good to have proof of!
The actual base construction of the PLM, I didn't expect to see pebbling under there, maybe to help the enamel adhere better? Also good to see confirmation that the letters were part of the body of the PLM, and the enamelling is poured around them, and infilled too!
Talking of the enamelling, on the reverse, it looks like there are two, or maybe even three separate layers of enamel? Could you confirm that, or not, please Rudiger!!
This is such an interesting PLM, and we can learn so much, just from this one piece!!

Yes Tony, a shame about the enamel. But the piece was, for a S&L, cheap and with the surprise being silver i can live with that. Furthermore it´s a really perfect piece for more study about these as we finally can look deeper ....... even under the enamel.
It´s guys like me who help the community to learn more while spending money on damaged pieces.
Nevertheless i am no mint collector, i like of course mint pieces but also love well worn pieces. Although this one has most likely never been worn i love it as it is with the battle worn used look.

Nigel, i can´t confirm three layers of enamel. IMO it´s just only one layer but it chips like a flintstone. Seems that the enamel is very hard.

I added a bigger pic of the big chip and of the area of the crown. Eventually you see that the crown is a part of the die.

P.S. On the pics a piece looks more bad than in hand. Remember that on pics a piece is always much larger. The sellers pic shows good how it looks in display and the reverse can´t be seen

Thanks for the info and extra photo's Ruduger! I see what you mean it does look like it chips to different depths, as you said just like a flint, but seems like it was originally laid down in one thick layer!!

An interesting and nice piece even with the enamel damage! I had never thought about adding a PLM of this vintage, however now I am hooked! Seeing your great items always leads to me spending additional monies!

You stated a later made piece. What decade would you place the manufacture of this piece?

Thanks for posting and these are the types of pieces I want to see in addition to the true "medal law" pieces. No matter what they are named, or what we name our group on the WAF!

Are you sure this is not a WW1 original piece or then rather an original one made during WW2 ???

Can you help me on the following :

1. Markings on the ring ( is has the silver mark, but what is the additional mark next to the "800" ) ?
It seems to be a logo of some sort .... AK ???

2. Markings on the loop - to me, looks like an additional mark next to "800".
Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I recognize the Paul Meybauer logo in it ???
