Finish with a look at some of the documents and paperwork, which the seller gave me for free!!
Theres a huge amount spread over several folders, starting with his training notes in 1937 and continuing through the war years, at least one postwar paper is dated 1955, but theres so much I haven't had the chance to study it in any detail........

Hi Nigel, sadly I was outbid on the heavily damaged DKiG, but I was able to win this gold reconnaissance clasp.
Looking back, there was very little interest in the clasp and therefore the cheapest one from the group .

On first glance, it looks like a normal clasp, but look closer and you'll spot an odd feature.
For some unknown reason, the centre of the clasp was carefully removed.
                    Then - another ( wartime ??? ) eagle's head was neatly inserted.
I can only assume that - after that swap - the entire badge was refinished in gold.
The eagle's head got a fresh coat of black paint and feathers were detailed.
Also, there is a weird drill mark on top of the beak ( to secure the clasp via ribbon ??? ).

Again, an interesting piece as were the majority of these items for sale .....

                    Grtz,
                    Mathijs

                        And the hardware ....

All in all, must say a fine clasp and worth every penny .

Very nice grouping Nigel. The paperwork is a great bonus! Are there any photos of the wearer?

@ Mathijs, what a beautiful clasp and it looks profesionally repaired! It wouldn't surprise me if this was done by a retailer of 57er awards. Here are two ads from a GdR magazine I own...

                          Best regards,
                          Nick

                            Hi Nigel

What a fantastic grouping. It is always unfortunate when the seller decides to split a group for profit! Well done to you sir for trying to keep it together.

                            Best regards
                            Pierce

Clearly a vet who was very proud of his medal. They were much loved and had a lot of work done on them. The EKI is a killer. The Ost medal is too.

Nigel, Mathijs, great catches.....the mixture of old & new is evocative ! I love these types of award/sets....they clearly show that the vet was attached to his original issue pieces ! or a tight wad ! (joking ).........very personal pieces with provenance to boot, great acquisitions chaps !
                                Prost ! Steve.
