Hi Guys,

I have enjoyed this fantastic thread for some time now.

I have a question regarding traditions of wear for the different sizes of awards which I thought would be pertinent to this thread since we see all sorts of variations here.

Perhaps others could verify but my preliminary impressions regarding tradition of wear are:
1) Medal bars (Ordenspangen) - on military uniforms
2) Ribbon bars (Bandschnallen) - on military uniforms, i.e. mostly limited to those who served in the Bundeswehr
3) Miniature medal bars (Miniaturordenspangen) - black tie (tuxedo) events
4) Miniature chains (Frackketten/Ordensketten) - white tie (tails) events or black tie events
5) Stick pins (Miniaturen an Nadel) - on civilian suits

In practise we see in this thread all sorts of mixing and matching so obviously rules were meant to be broken, but is there an "official" etiquette/regulation defined for these things?

Hi Norm, As far as the OdR go's it's a mix match of who wears what. at the 3 reunions I have attended, no specific reg's were in place. I will say this however, OdR black tie events were more formal and it seems that they all "knew" what to wear. Tom

Thanks Mustangstje. Very interesting. That certainly explains Tom's observation that the members of the Ordensgemeinschaft der Ritterkreuzträger all knew what to wear!

As expected, the silk lapels of a Tuxedo were sacrosanct and only regular suits allowed lapel pins. It seems white tie events (with tails) were a 19th century custom and largely abandoned in the 20th century for the more "casual" black tie attire, so "Frackkette" is a somewhat archaic term for the Miniaturkette.
