Holy smokes Pierce! What an AWESOME set of bars to a very brave man!

Very nice and early bars, all appearing to be worn and from different era's! The photo of him wearing one of the bars is really something special! To have such detailed history on him is just fantastic!

i thought this might be interesting for everyone to know how i go about researching

so the first thing i do is usually just type into various search engines his name coupled with ww2, bundeswehr his rank etc looking thought images and the web if nothing pops up as is this case i do a search for all know bundeswehr panzergrenadier divisions that were formed at the start of the bundeswehr (this is the part that takes a while) in this case most panzergrenadiers divisions were disbanded in 1994.
after ive found them all (in the future that is) i then search were each division was loacted this is helpful because i know that Rudolf died in Hachenburg so as he wasn't born in that area theres a good change he served there at some time. finally we pray a lotfind a list of officers the fact that he was a major is good because we have a photo of him and most majors and above can be found (just takes a lot of digging about)
so thats the plan and we shall see what bones we find
ill keep the thread informed if i make any amazing discoverys

ohh you should see me with some of them all of a sudden theres a loud ARRRHHHH. its fun really

so far i have found out that Hachenburg (where he died) is about 20miles east of Bonn. the 2nd panzergrenadier division (founded 1956) was based at Kassel which is about 60miles east of hachenburg
next the 1st panzergrenadier brigade (founded 1958) was based in hannover which may seem like a bit further away but it also had a base along the river weser (which just stops short of kassel) and a base near the harz mountains which is about 20-30 miles north east of kassel.
my guess he was based at one of these. rememeber that his jacket is a 4 pocket but with pointed shoulderboards so he must have joined about 1958-59

sorry lads screwed up just a touch what i forgot was that the 2nd panzergrenadier division was first in based in kassel then it was reorganised and was stationed to marlurg in 1959 (roughly same age as his jacket) which is just 25miles from Hachenburg which was where he died i think we have a definate connection
