    1957 issue flight badges

    This got me thinking recently.

I have seen some really nice early '57 Ek1's that were made with the original tooling. The hinge, pin, catch, frosting, etc just like the TR model only the different core.

I have seen a similar DKiG that appeared to be made from the original tooling (see pics) but I have never seen a '57 flight badge made this way. Has anyone?

Any thoughts as to why not??

I am not 100% sure about this one. However it is a very early type with a little different pin.

The pin is soldered on the hinge and not bend like the later types.

        '57 Glider Pilot Badge

Hi Richard, here's some pictures of a very, very nice Model '57 Glider Pilot Badge. The eagle actually look like a correct, war-time piece. It is maker-marked for Assmann, with the identical A as used during the war. However, I am not aware of any war-time Glider Badges by this firm. I owned this briefly, then passed it on to a fellow who had purchased a war-time one from me.

                Funny thing is...

... I had archive photos of these two rather rare badges, but no pilot, no observer and no gunner! Once upon a time, I had a massive group of these that came in a trade from Germany. Currently, I have a collection of the numbered '57 badges.. I can take pix, if anyone's interested.

Interesting badges. But what I'm trying to get at is a luft badge, made from the original dies, with the exact same type of hinge/catch, riveting, etc only the wreath or eagle being modified so that it is de-nazified.

Deumer made the early EK1's this way so why not luft badges as well?? They were not bombed out so presumably still had all the original dies...

p.s. it would be interesting to compare that glider eagle with known TR glider badges to see if there is a match... never know, it might help to identify an unmarked TR glider badge to Assmann!

No other interest? I could have sworn there were luftwaffe enthusiasts here but obviously I was wrong.

                        Hi Richard..

..I missed your original intent, sorry. I was just excited to see someone talking about these badges. I don't have any pilot-archival badges to check this for you, but it makes sense that at least initially, they would modify an existing die, as opposed to the expensive task of remaking one.
On the Glider badge, wish I had thought of that before shipping it off. I will contact the fellow who has it and ask him to post scans of the eagle. I bought it to go with a Glider I had. One of our members cajoled it out of me and as a bonus, when I sent it, I sent him the '57 glider as well.

If you can get a comparison on the glider badge it could be very interesting...

I have an observer badge on the way. Here is a preview. If you want I can take a few photos and post here.

                              Glider pilots badge

                              Hello,

I also did think we could match some badges (and in my case it was the Glider pilots badge that was of interest) for some time and therefore did buy a 57 badge with what i tough had a similar looking eagle then its wartime counterparts. (are you up to something Rich ? )

I have compared the eagle from the 57 badge towards known original example's and i can confirm that none have a exact match so far !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The eagle on the 57 Model shows slightly different characteristics in regards to wings, eyebrow, feathering, etc ... etc ... but it is hard to see.

I am however quite sure that in a few cases original dies where converted but as far as it stands now the Glider pilots badge is not one of these IMHO!!!!!!!!!

                              Cordial greetings,
my collectionfield : German glider pilots
