Thanks for the comments. Could you please explain why you believe this to be a reproduction ?

I haven't had any alarm bells ringing about this one, it appears to match to others which are stated and agreed to be genuine 57 items, and the overall finish, feel and set up of the badge are, when examined 'in the hand', good.

The general opinion on these, ( they have been shown in a few other places as well), is that they are S&L made pieces from around the late 1960's.

I agree with David, the badge is struck, not casted, hollow rivets and the typical finish. Late production from Steinhauer, i would prefer the 1970 years, in that time the rivets were reduced from 4 to 2 and the plate with the number was always glued to the badge.

This is the reverse of badge from my own collection, made in the period 1957 to 1960. As far as i know only 2 rivets was used in the early years. The big difference between the first badges made and the badges made a few years later is the lack of cutouts in the eagle. On the first badges as on this example you will find 3 cutouts. The center cutout is here hidden by the needle.

Thanks David, like yours a nice badge, but both are beaten by the highlight from Peters collection. And mine is sad and lonely, the only numbered GAB in my collection ...... i hope to find a companion for it.

I think it is also Steinhauer. If i compare the eagle, grenade, bayonet and wreath i say the same tool was used. This badge was produced over a period of 25 years and so we should expect some changes in design and construction. The number of produced numbered GABs was shurely very small, until 1990 it was nearly impossible to sell them on the market. And how many former recipients were there ? I think Deumer and Assmann stopped the production/development of such rare badges very early, Deumer concentrated on the often awarded decorations like EK, IAB, WB and Assmann had a lot of work and earned enough money with supplying the new formed Federal German Army with badges and all kind of metal parts. You should also compare this badge with the Ground Combat Badge of the Luftwaffe, style of number, rivets....
The model shown by David is the latest version, still on sale on militaria321 by "nordwind" , Mr. Freitag who sells the items still in stock from Steinhauers last produktion, the 75 for 85,- Euro, the 100 for 110,- Euro.
