    Hi Pat,

Great looking piece. It looks to me to be one of those "off to war" banners but I can't be sure as I don't try reading kanji without my references close at hand.

    Regards,
    Stu

Its a nice looking send off Banner. Its in a design style I have not seen before, with the red son in the center. Often the red orb will have will rays coming from it, like the rayed battle flag. It has the popular slogan Ki Buun Chou Kyuu, or praying for everlasting fortune in battle , in red ,on the right lower side, as well as the name of the person they are sending of in bold down the center.

        Shussei Nobori [Send-Off Banner]

        Here you go:

        Shuku
        Congratulations

        出征
        Shussei
        Departure [for military service]

        武運長久
        Bu'un Chōkyū
Continued Luck in the Fortunes of War

        森本幹夫君
        Morimoto Mikio-kun
        Mr. Morimoto Mikio

        東京
        Tokyo
        内一正男
        Uchimoto Masao

So ... Mr. Uchimoto paid for the banner to see-off Mr. Morimoto as he was sent off to join the army.

        Cheers!

I'm thinking Guy has it with the slogan Buun Chokyu. I don't see the 5th kanji for the Prayers portion.

          Regards,
          Stu
