So, I did a little research and found this:

What the above does NOT say is that Higo died!...Japan Parachute Works technician, Higo Seizo, had an adventure when he used a Nonaka type parachute to fall 30 meters. This was the lowest altitude opening trial in the world [at that time].

When a test to establish the minimum dive world record was conducted with a Nonaka-style parachute, Seizo Higo (18 at the time) died because the parachute did not open. This incident has become known as 'the parachute that did not open,' and the investigator and also creator, Shoji Nonaka (57), entered a plea for involuntary manslaughter. The trial for Shoji Nomura was held at 11 a.m. on the 22nd at the Tokyo Courthouse, No. 1 courtroom, by Chief Justice Miyake and prosecutor Oba. Long live Higo Seizo! Quite a story for sure.
Value for this parachute is difficult to gauge - it's not military so that restricts its appeal and value significantly. A good WWII IJN pilot parachute goes around $4-6K depending on style, condition and completeness. And even that market has gotten soft over the past few years. But this is in NO WAY even close to that. I would put this item in the category of "Historical Nippon Aviation " and I couldn't even begin to tell you how big that is. If someone were an avid collector of the golden age of aviation in the 1930's and had a focused passion on the aviation industry in Japan (and pilot accessories like this) then they might be interested but that's a hard to locate niche collector.Comment
