Thank you very much! May I take it that Yamamoto is the owners name?
It is a fair assumption that Yamamoto is the owner's name of your 飯盒 Hangō [cooking utensil]. But which owner?
To me, the name looks as if it is done in magic marker; it is not paint or lacquer -- and is on metal... and the blockiness of the way the strokes finish make me think of a Magic Marker (majikku pen in Japanese). This 1949-produced hangō cooker COULD have been used post-war by campers -- it is still a popular piece of camping equipment. So, if it is marked in "majikku pen", I do not think it was done to deceive. I used to own US Army equipment when I was in Boy Scouts, and I marked my equipment with my surname; I hope no future collector of military equipment thinks my rucksack, mess kit, etc., were owned by a 1950s soldier named GHP.
