New Pay Book / Grouping ?

Hi, I recently bought a group of items that is purportedly a cavalry group, I wanted to share. I bought the group for its parts and am not holding out hope it is all related but you never know.

I am showing some of the "paperwork"/photos and hoping someone might be kind enough to glance at this and tell me if there is anything interesting or unusual or even if this is possibly cavalry related.

I am struggling through the pay book and so far can only discern the following: the soldier signed the oath on 12/10/1920. Instead of cavalry I see that the owner of this book was an engineer? The rank section shows promotions from 2nd class private to superior private (both crossed out) until final entry of rank as corporal.

There is also a small ledger that I don't know what it was for or contains. Again any help would be greatly appreciated. Besides campaigns I was fascinated to learn that punishments were included in these pay books and would be interested to know if there is any thing like that contained herein. Thanks for looking. It looks like your guy belonged to the 5th Division, Independent Telegraph Battalion, 3rd Company. He went over to China with his unit and has several battle entries, including the Battle of Xuzhou (May, 1938). Neat booklet! The other booklet is an address booklet. I have a couple in my collection. Some later booklets will have unit codes of some entries and you can see where his friends, others served.

Post 2: Imperial Rescript signed Taisho 9 (1920) which is when this booklet seems to start.

Post 4: Entries to Showa 14 (1939) June 1st. Promoted to Kohei (Engineer) Gocho (Corporal) which is when entries seem to end.

Very long service Guntai Techo. Really nice!

Edit: Google Translate says 障害飛越 is "Show Jumping." Literally it is "hurdle/obstacle jumping over"

That is really strange about the name change? I can't even guess as to why that is? I notice now that the first part of the name on the cover of the Techo has been written over also.

Thanks again for giving me some context and valuable information on all these items.

The name change was a common occurrence since Samurai days. As I wrote in "Chrysanthemum and the Helmet" the first son inherited everything and the other sons went to the navy or to Hawaii or Brazil, etc, just to live. Or like here they could be adopted by another family, which only had daughters, to carry on their family name. Isoroku Takano was a 6th son, who joined the navy and in his 30s married into the Yamamoto family to take on their family name.
Nowadays the Japanese are not too hung up on maintaining the family name, so adopted sons are not so common as before.
