the Russian version ???

...On the subject of captured flags, it says that the Japanese Army captured a total
of 3 Russian regimental colors during battles in the Russo Japanese War, and details
how they were captured. One of the stories is quite amazing, about a Russian soldier,
who protected his flag even through his captivity in a POW camp in Matsuyama Japan.
He had removed the flag from the pole before capture, and surrendered only the pole.
He managed to successfully smuggle the flag into the camp and kept it hidden in the
ceiling space, offering his prayers to it every night. When he was finally released at the
end of hostilities, he returned to St. Petersburg with the flag. He was commended by the
Czar and the regiment was bestowed a new standard. Although, this story was at the
expense of the Japanese army, which had been duped into believing that the Russians
had burned the flag before capture, the booklet tells this tale of the enemy with clear
respect...

Posted the above in WAF t=632803, and got the following reply:
"According to the russian sources, Japanese not captured any complete colors.
They got two or three empty staffs without cloths and pole tops. In captivity,
Russian POWs saved and late returned to Russia three banners - 162d (Akhaltsikhe)
infantry regiment, 241 (Orsk) infantry regiment and 4th riffle regiment."
