modified sword tassel from Iwo Jima

    Hello all,

My Grandfather brought back this sword with tassel(s) from Iwo Jima and I would like some opinions on what fellow forum members think about the set up: The leather tassel is not something I have seen before, and I think that it was an unorthodox addition that compensated for the damaged company level tassel also on the sword. According to my grandfather, both tassels have always been on the sword and were brought back that way from the war. Has anyone seen a similar tassel before? Thoughts? Any information greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Tom

There was a pre war time period in which the Japanese used the German style knots. I'll have to check my reference books for more info but I'd not write this one off just yet.

Looks very similar but not quite the same.

Any other thoughts on this very interesting item Tom has provided us with?

                    Regards,

Thanks all for the help! I suppose it wouldn't be too far fetched with the Japanese taking over the South Pacific Mandates from the Germans post WW1 as well as Dutch territory later on.

This sword has a lot of provenance hopefully your grandfather has a picture of him holding it. Also a hand written letter sign by him regarding how he obtain this sword plus service records would do wonders to the value of this sword.

Yes, I have thought about such a route with the other bringbacks my grandfather has given me over the years so as to secure the provenance of the items.
