Sword acquisition - I have no clue...

I threw out a lowball bid on this at an auction and won it. I'm not out much money for it, and was actually aiming for other items, got outbid, and walked away with this. So, obviously rough condition, but looking for info now Chris....

        Hello Chris,

Well, it has a resemblance to an Army Kyu-gunto or perhaps a Colonial Occupation Official sword but the quality of construction in nowhere near what I have come to expect of a Japanese made piece. Additionally, the presence of a wing nut is something I've never seen nor read about associated to a Japanese sword.

I have also viewed the photos with a mind to it being a theatre made piece but on balance I'm inclined to agree with member gunto that it's some sort of fake or reproduction.

        Regards,
        Stu

The details are so washed out, it looks like a fake Chinese sword to me. I just don't see how the details would / could all be worn down to the point they are so evenly. I would expect wear in certain areas, but not in others!

The hole for the knot strap is missing in the knocklebow ,its filled out when casting. Its very poor quality , abselute fake.

Could also be a very poor quality Manchukuoan sword. Can you see anything on the backstrap that looks like crossed flags?
