    Japanese scope ID?

Can anyone tell me what this is, and the rarity of it? I know absolutely nothing about Japanese optics. Thanks, Chris....

    Don't know but ...

Please post an image of the paper label inside the lid.

    The data plate says:

    日本光學工業株式会社
    第277号*
    昭和 年 月

    Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha
    Number 277 th
    Showa [blank] Year [blank] Month

*the actual kanji (I've substituted ) on the data plate is similar to the old-school writing (today is used ) meaning ordinal [~th; ~rd]; however, there is significant difference on the right-side of the kanji. So, there is probably a correct ordinal kanji out there somewhere ... if I could find it. In Japanese, there are very many different counters, depending on the item (or shape) the counted item is. [long cylindrical things = hon; spheres = ko; numbers = ban; swords = furi; etc.]

Founded in 1917 as Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō Kabushikigaisha (日本光学工業株式会社 "Japan Optical Industries Corporation"), the company was renamed Nikon Corporation, after its cameras, in 1988. The name Nikon, which dates from 1946, is a merging of Nippon Kōgaku (日本光学: "Japan Optical") and Zeiss' brand Ikon.
