japanese camo uniforms ????

hello guys

i have bought the smal book warriors of imperial japan in world war II



on page 17 you see a camo soldier,,, this is the first time i see this,, is this correct

the text is the camouflage garment wasprobaly made by Takashimaya compagny,,,,,



there are more pictures in the book that for me are not correct,,, but i am learling every day, maybe i am wrong

I have flipped through this book before and kind of thought that the artist crammed everything cool onto one soldier, one page after another. Some of it seems rather fanciful, at least to me. I think the color photograph on the cover was probably much more the norm than some of the illustrations.

The machine gunner has the nambu holster in front??? What would he do when he should lie down?
How does he hold the mg? It looks way to big?
The camo dude , sure looks like theme I draw when I was teen.

Hi Bruno-san,

The camo Guy reminds me of the Giretsu Kuuteitai 義烈空挺隊 - Army Special Paratrooper Force.

They did in fact camo painted their uniforms and field gears in green blotches, and streaks, unlike in the drawing. Looks more like a German "P45 pattern camo".

Was it green or black? I heard somewhere else they had sumi ink mixed with vinegar.

The Giretsu Airborne Troops applied color to their uniforms as camouflage before departure.

I never trust artist's illustrations. They always seem to take liberties & can't seem to keep with the "facts". As Taka mentioned the illustration comes close to Giretsu raider. I also had heard they used black ink or paint. Only printed/factory camo the Japanese actually used was a scarce rubberized rain coat

there are more pictures in the book most are drawing that are not correct,,,,,there are some good real pictures in the book , but these you find also in other books

Besides the cammo, the Giretsu group all wore uniforms modified to have a grenade pocket. Done at the individual level and nothing for Takashimaya to get involved in. Instead of ready made ink (Bokuju) they used stick ink and also made juice out of the vegetation to stain their uniforms with. Some sprayed the ink on, while others brushed it on. Reenactors like to mix vinegar in the ink, as that prevents the ink from running, but I do not know whether the real guys did that, because laundry-proofing the ink wouldn't have been high on their agenda.

The tag reads:

I agree. Be curious if it's named & how rank tabs are attached. Based on tags I've seen before that hang tag style isn't a type used by Japanese. Could be wrong but highly suspect

Hiroo Onoda mentions being issued with a camo uniform in his book "No Surrender".
