Late War IJA Tank Commander Photo

Sharing a photo I added to my collection recently. The back is dated Showa 19.12.31 (Dec. 31, 1944). Looks like Sgt.Major rank insignia, but seems to have an officer's tassel on a sword in Type 98 mounts. Type 94 pistol holster and a map case on his side. He's got his tank helmet, goggles and coveralls. Some sort of insignia on his collar behind the rank tabs, but partially covered.

Thanks, I was able to read some of that, but I would have never figured out 習 the way it's written on the photo.
