Hello Nick,

A good polish runs minimum 100 USD per inch and often more. I'm wondering what it is that you see in a Shin-Shinto (or even Shinto) mumei wak that warrants such expense. I'm not suggesting you should not, as you have it in hand and can see the details better than we can, but I'd just like to know.

do you mean the lemon juice i used to bring out the hamon? a hamon which is still be there once polished?
what do japanese smiths use to show up the hamon after the rough polish ?

yes its shin shinto and does not warrant a $100 an inch polish but it was cheap and we are lucky in the uk to have some talented togishi who dont charge that much
it came with a nice saya double habaki and tsuka
i will post some photos when it comes back
even mumei waki`s deserve a new life

This sword in no way has an acid polish. From what I can see, I believe it is older than a Late Edo Period blade. Shape and form to me look similar to Kanbun or Enpo Shinto.

It's good that you have the availability of quality polishing at lower cost. It does give some blades a second chance that might otherwise be passed over.

The blade shows influence of the Soshu School of swordmaking. Of course, it is impossible to attain a proper opinion just from pictures. If you spend the money for polish, you would be better served to have a tsunagi made for the mounts and shirasaya for the blade. It would be a shame to have a freshly polished blade scratched by unseen crud hiding in the old saya.
