Here are two WW2 Japanese Items captured on Tarawa by a US Marine. Can anyone please tell me what these are. Thanks

The accordian style document is called a rirekihyo and was the IJN sailors personal record document, roughly similar to the IJA techo (see my avatar pic.) It had things like ship transfers, base transfers, etc.

    The book is a dictionary.

    Thanks for sharing!

Would it be possible to get close up pics. of the entries from your last pic.? Its the side with the three written-in panels followed by three empty panels. Those entries should give information about the final unit the sailor was in when he was on Tarawa. Thanks!

Very cool, I haven't seen one of these before. Interesting to know if there are any ship names written? Thanks for Sharing.

That' s a very nicely detailed record.

He was assigned to different duties in different locations.

If I have the time I can translate all of them.

              Best regards,

              Taka

                Hi David,

I found one navy Special Transport 藤影丸 (Toei Maru). It was a civilian ship that converted to Navy use. Sunk by Seahorse(SS-304) on Feb 1st 1944.

He was on board of 藤影丸at :

                Kure ~ Palau Dec 29th 1941
                Palau ~ Davao Jan 7th 1942
                Davao ~ Tarakan Island Jan 14th 1942
                Tarakan Island ~ Balikpapan Jan 21st 1942
Landed on Balikpapan on Jan 25th 1942

I found the actual ship's record and the above scheduled matches completely. Japanese site : http://www.geocities.jp/tokusetsukan...27/327_062.htm

                Best regards,

                Taka

Like Taka mentioned, it is a detailed record. I am sure others can give greater detail to the record, but a couple items that stand out are the entries for the
6th Yokosuka SNLF and the 3rd Special Base Force. The record makes note of the 3rd SBF on Tarawa with a date right on the money: Feb. 15, 1943 - when the 6th Yoko. SNLF became the 3rd Base force. The sailor saw a lot and was in the Navy from at least 1939, maybe earlier. If I am not mistaken, it looks like the sailor was promoted a few short weeks before the beach landings took place. A fantastic document with extraordinary history attached to it!

Too many "cut and paste" kanji!!! Koyanagi Machi [Small Willow Town].

                    Sorry.

                      More photos of this group

Here are some more photos of this group of stuff. It all came from a Marine that was on Tarawa with 3rd Battalion 8th Marines. There are some of his medals including a Purple Heart. The scrap book has a few more Japanese items in it as well. See the photos below. I have had this in my collection for a few year now and I am just getting around to really taking a close look at it. There are some Army medals from post war. The Good Conduct has him name engraved on it, so I think he served in the Army post war.

                        Awsome grouping!

By the way, can you post Mr. Hasegawa' s complete record. I can see there are two

more pages that didn't have the close ups.

                        Best regards,

                        Taka

This is indeed an incredible grouping. Your guy was in K company 3/8 (Maj. Robert Ruud). They sailed for Tarawa aboard the U.S.S Monrovia. K co took probably 70% casualties landing/wading ashore on Red 3. Did you get a chance to know/interview this guy? Is the PH the Naval style heart? Thanks for posting this.

I did a translation for the first page (Brief summary of his record).

Will continue the rest of the page.

                              Sorry for the delay.

                              Hope it helps.
