Japanese flag with a Pearl Harbor connection

    Hello everyone,
Here is a flag from my collection that has just been translated for me. It has a loose connection to Pearl Harbor as noted below. Thank you to Hisashi at AHF for the great translation and insight into this flag. What amazes me is how some people, like Hisashi and our own Nick Komiya can not only read a flags printed words, but understand the story it tells. If anyone can add any information, it would be greatly appreciated. Here is the translation as provided by Hisashi.

    "Paulg,
This flag is extra rich in information in comparison with many similar hinomaru.

The man who received this flag was 藤原信行君 (Mr. Fujiwara Nobuyuki). And in the right end,
    宇佐神宮参拝戦勝祈願記念
    昭和十六年十二月八日
reads that this flag was a memorial of the visit and pray for victory at Usa Jingu Shrine(宇佐神宮) in 8 Dec 1941. Note that Pearl Harbor Attack was in Japan at dawn of 8 Dec, not 7 Dec. On 祈武運長久 at center-above, you read four-character stamp 宇佐神宮. 神 is an old style of 神.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usa_jing%C5%AB

    In the left-below I read

    大分縣杵築町 Oita Prefecture, Kitsuki Town
松村旭富 Matsumura Akitomi(?) I am not sure.

Kitsuki Town is about 30km distant from Usa.

    Many navy men signed.
海軍一等整備兵 navy aircraft maintenance sailor, 1st class
    海軍水兵長 navy senior sailor
海軍上等水兵 navy senior sailor (old class name)
海軍二等兵曹 navy petty officer, 2nd class

But Matsumura seemed not a navy man. Left-above message reads

    為国に生きる Living for the nation
    産業戦士 an industrial warrior
    幸運を祈りて Praying your good luck

Sangyo Senshi (industrial warrior) was a common wartime expression for a war contributor in manufacturing or mining. So he seemed mobilized as a civilian in the beginning of war, say, oil refining specialist or aviation mechanic advisor from Mitsubishi bra bra."

Here is a modern day photo of the Usa Jingu shrine, where this flag was blessed on the day Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor and declared war on the United States.

Interesting flag! It looks like the shrine's stamp was applied twice, but the two stamps have different styles of kanji. I wonder why that is.

Hi Paul, that's a nice looking flag!

I too am amazed at, and appreciative of, the help we get from all the fellow collectors who take the time to translate and weave a story from these items. My hat is always off to them!

And what a beautiful shrine that is.

                              Regards

                              Russ
