This site might help you out. Go to "Army Officers Type 94" and you can see the difference. There are books by Fuller and Dawson that are excellent if you plan to collect Japanese WW2 swords.

Fullers and Gregory references as stated above as well as Jim Dawsons "Swords of Imperial Japan Cyclopedic edition" Dawson also had a softcover version published earlier thats a good one. I agree no chance on these.
